A few weeks ago, I decided I'd try to sell the van (a 1989 VW camper, formerly my mom's, which I took possession of in October--when I drove it from Seattle to DC).
I put an ad up on "thesamba.com" and asked for $10,000. Yes, it was priced high, but that's what Mom said it was worth. It looked comparable to the other campers for sale.
And I heard...nothing. I cross-posted on Craigslist, which got me two bites. Eventually, I got two more bites. One guy wanted me to drive the van to him to inspect. Um, no thanks. Another person offered me $2,500!!! Damn, that's really low-balling. I mean, on thesamba.com, $2,500 is where the parts vehicles start.
It's fine, because I don't need to sell the van. Sure, I could use the money, but I don't need the money. It's handy to have a vehicle and it will be handy to have it when I come back.
Still, I wondered why I wasn't getting more interest. Today, it finally hit me: it's the economic downturn, stupid!
I feel like I'm living in some bubble where the economy is good but all around me things are slowly collapsing. I'm lucky and privileged. And if I'm really lucky, I'll have a fully functioning, non-vandalized van to come home to. Fingers crossed.
Grateful for: my inherent/parent-bestowed frugality.
