Good day

It should be painfully obvious that I'm in the need of some heavy-duty cheering up. I will try to leave the complaining off-line and tell you about what put a smile on my face today.

1) I got a call from a congressional staffer (a senior committee type), asking for a clean copy of a paper of mine he found on the internet. It's an unpublished conference paper from 2004 that I adapted from my dissertation. It's the best thing out of there--a brief, descriptive, historical piece and I love it. It's been used by a colleague or two in their classes and because you can search it out on the web, strangers will sometimes ask me about it. Now this fellow wants to distribute the paper to his committee as a background piece! Even more surprising--he works for a Republican! I hit him with my two-fer: "Some of my best friends are Republicans" and "My boyfriend is a Republican--he'll love this." Luckily, he laughed, and assured me I'd be voting Republican in no time. No, but you can't blame a guy for trying.

2) I re-connected with a favorite old friend on facebook. Annoying as it is, this is why you can love facebook! Now, I haven't been in touch with this friend for many years but as soon as he popped up on the "suggestions" page, I smiled and had no doubt about "friending" him. He wrote to me today and I get the feeling he's just as happy to meet me again. What fun! Even better, by pure coincidence, we're both going to be in New York at the end of the month and may even get a chance to see each other. This is very cool and, again, makes me smile.

Other than that, half of my angst is too boring to repeat. The other half is too personal. Major drawback of having friends and boyfriends read the blog. Oh well! Maybe bottled up angst will dissipate rather than grow. In the meantime, I will try to keep smiling.

Also, leaving for Seattle in a couple of days and I'm looking forward to the trip. Another smile for Seattle!

Grateful for: professional respect.
